Dive Brief:
- CMS this week released a list of EHR products that providers used to attest to meaningful use. As of May 31, of the 485 eligible providers who have attested for Stage 2, 287 use athenahealth's EMR athenaClinicals.
- Overall, athenahealth's solution is not widely used — only 3% of providers use athenaClinicals — making the fact that the EHR makes up 60% of successful attestations even more striking.
- AthenaClinicals is the only EHR vendor to publicly track clients' MU performance and offers a guarantee of successful attestation.
Dive Insight:
CMS' announcement comes amidst ongoing industry-wide complaints surrounding EHR vendors that aren't able to deliver the promised products. In fact, CMS and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT recently proposed easing attestation requirements and delaying the program's timelines overall.
"The loosened requirements and delays for the meaningful use program have been too heavily influenced by the many software vendors who have not been able to upgrade their EHR products, receive certification or adequately support their healthcare provider clients," athenahealth chairman and CEO Jonathan Bush said in a news release.
