Dive Brief:
- Almost half of large U.S. hospitals could buy a new EMR by 2016, according to a KLAS report.
- Vendors under consideration by these hospitals include Allscripts, Cerner, Epic, McKesson, MEDITECH and Siemens.
- Of providers who said they were considering a new EMR purchase, 34% said they've already selected a vendor, and 44% said they are strongly leaning towards a certain vendor, KLAS concluded.
Dive Insight:
According to KLAS, while the last round of EMR investments were prompted by Meaningful Use incentives and requirements, this next round of investment is being prompted by concerns about outdated technology and health system consolidation. In other words, despite having spent untold millions to put their EMR in place, many hospitals will essentially have to start all over again, both financially and operationally. This isn't good news.
