Richard D. Goldstein, MD, a noted pediatrician with a focus on sudden unexpected death in pediatrics (SUDP), serves on the panel of leading medical experts of MerckManuals.com.
Dr. Goldstein is the author of the Sudden Unexpected Infant Death and Brief, Resolved, Unexplained Events chapter of the Merck Manuals, which is informed by his extensive clinical and research experience in SUDP.
Dr. Goldstein directs the Robert’s Program on Sudden Unexpected Death in Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, a program he co-founded that provides comprehensive attention and support to parents struggling to understand why their child has died and what it means for their family’s future health. He is also an associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Goldstein is a leader in research focused on factors underlying unexplained pediatric death, the development of a clinical response to it, and the challenges faced by grieving families. He was a pioneer in pediatric palliative care, and his contributions to the field of unexplained pediatric deaths have garnered international recognition, shaping contemporary understanding and approaches to sudden, unexpected deaths in infants and children.
Dr. Goldstein earned his MD from the Harvard Medical School in 1989. He then completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, followed by a fellowship in behavioral-developmental pediatrics at the same institution.
