Today, Good Days and partners across the country mark Chronic Disease Day, an annual national observance founded by Good Days to raise awareness about the growing impact of chronic disease and the urgent need to ensure that medical innovation reaches every patient who needs it.
Observed each year on July 10 (7/10), the date reflects the sobering reality that seven out of the top ten deaths in the United States are caused by chronic diseases.
Many of these conditions are preventable, yet they account for more than 90 percent of the nation's healthcare spending. At the same time, remarkable advances in medicine continue to transform what is possible for patients living with chronic illnesses if they can access the care they need.
"Healthcare innovation has never moved faster, but too many patients are still unable to benefit from these breakthroughs because of financial and systemic barriers," said Clorinda Walley, president of Good Days and founder of Chronic Disease Day. "On Chronic Disease Day, we celebrate scientific progress while recognizing that innovation only fulfills its promise when it reaches the people whose lives depend on it."
Founded in 2014 by Good Days, Chronic Disease Day has grown into a national initiative. Organizations and individuals across the country are participating in awareness campaigns, educational initiatives, community events, and policy discussions designed to elevate the voices of people living with chronic disease and encourage solutions that improve access to treatment and support.
For Good Days, that work continues every day of the year. Since 2003, the national nonprofit has provided more than three millions grants and $4 billion assistance dollars to cover more than 9.5 million treatments.
