Dive Brief:
- Indiana Health Information Exchange and Health Bridge, based in Cincinnati, are sending patient health data between the states. The Indiana exchange has been sending clinical data to Health Bridge's parent company, Health Collaborative, for more than six years for patients being provided care within Indiana.
- Health Collaborative is now providing patient information to doctors practicing at Indiana-based Reid Health, which provides care to approximately 280,000 patients in both states.
- Both health information exchange officials said the hope is to build on this data exchange and eventually expand it to additional hospitals in the area.
Dive Insight:
Craig Brammer, CEO of Health Collaborative, said in a statement the depth of the data exchange accomplished and its bidirectional flow sets it apart from other regions in the country.
According to a 2009 Healthcare IT News article, HealthBridge, the Indiana Health Information Exchange, and another organization, HealthLINC (Indiana), were the first in the U.S. to send clinical data through the exchanges and were "recognized as pioneers in a national trend to enable medical information to flow electronically between doctors and hospitals."
