- The Mayo Clinic and Leidos, a technology, engineering and science services provider, recently announced a strategic collaboration to develop products and services within Mayo's Life Sciences Incubator, a medtech center in Jacksonville, Florida.
- Separately, Intermountain Healthcare is partnering with revenue cycle management services provider R1 RCM on a technology and innovation center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
- Both collaborations intend to develop products that will help healthcare providers improve operations and services to patients.
A recent count found some 66 hospitals and systems have established dedicated departments or organizations to focus on areas such as process redesign, care delivery improvement, and support for surgeons and researchers developing medical devices, diagnostics and mobile health platforms.
Leidos and the Mayo Clinic said their collaboration will focus on research, development and market adoption of new tools, technologies and therapeutics. The plan is to build an accelerator on Mayo's Jacksonville campus in conjunction with the hospital's Life Sciences Incubator for medical technology R&D.
Leidos said it will bring to the table its technical expertise in system integration solutions and applied public health applications. Teams will reportedly identify, develop and commercialize new products and services, though the partners did not offer further detail on the nature of those offerings.
Intermountain Healthcare Chief Financial Officer Bert Zimmerli said the health system's partnership with R1 RCM will position the collaboration to be a leader in the "financial transformation" of the healthcare industry.
The partners plan to build a 30,000-square-foot facility in Salt Lake City to be called the R1 Technology and Innovation Center. The facility, scheduled to open in May, will test product concepts incorporating technologies including artificial intelligence and robotic process automation in the the revenue cycle, the organizations said.
In addition to the development of revenue cycle management solutions, the center will have a virtual cycle model office and serve as a client experience center, R1 RCM and Intermountain said.
