Markell will assume his new role Jan. 30 and will work alongside Lifespan’s newly appointed president and CEO John Fernandez, who also left an executive position at Mass General Brigham prior to joining Lifespan.
As CFO, Markell will lead the system’s key financial and operational initiatives, according to a release.
He served in executive roles at Mass General Brigham for nearly 22 years, and was responsible for oversight of $14 billion in operations and about $21 billion in assets, while managing teams focused on corporate finance, research management, information systems, real estate, treasury and human resources, according to the release.
“Mr. Markell will provide key counsel to the incoming CEO and board of directors on strategic planning and direction as the system rebuilds from COVID’s financial and operational impact,” Arthur Sampson, Lifespan’s interim president and CEO, said in the release.
