Name: John Fernandez
New title: CEO of Lifespan
Previous title: President of Mass Eye and Ear and president of Mass General Brigham Integrated Care
Fernandez will succeed Timothy Babineau, who stepped down in May after holding the position for 10 years, according to a release. Fernandez will assume his new role early next year.
He will lead the system’s strategic direction, build upon its quality and safety program and focus on Lifespan’s ambulatory footprint, according to the release.
Fernandez led initiatives to broaden access to ambulatory services in his previous role at Mass General Brigham, the release said.
In his 16-year role at Mass Eye and Ear, he led initiatives to raise surgical volumes by more than 70% and grow research funding from $18 million to $72 million. He also worked to expand sites of care, boosting the number of physician offices from four to 22.
“I’m confident that John has what it takes to lead Lifespan through the unprecedented headwinds that all healthcare organizations are experiencing across the country,” Lawrence Aubin, chairman of Lifespan’s board of directors, said in the release.
