Dive Brief:
- Geisinger Health System and AtlantiCare are exploring the idea of integrating their two systems.
- If the talks are successful, the agreement would build on the strengths of two powerful organizations; Danville, PA-based Geisinger serves 2.6 million people in 44 counties, and AtlantiCare serves southeastern New Jersey in nearly 70 locations with more than 5,460 employees and 600 physicians.
- Geisinger's bond debt is AA-rated and AtlantiCare's debt is A-rated.
Dive Insight:
This affiliation agreement could have dramatic results. Geisiner is already something of a collosus and AtlantiCare sounds like it has all the piece in place to "own" the area of southeastern Jersey where it is based. With the added strength of Geisinger on board, AtlantiCare has nowhere to go but up, and Geisinger has the chance to extend its sphere of influence considerably. This looks like a savvy deal for both sides.
