August 4, 2026 — Overjet, the world’s leading dental AI solution, today announced a new FDA clearance for Real-time Image Quality Checking, catching X-ray issues before the patient leaves the chair. IRIS is the first dental imaging system cleared by the FDA to assess image quality with AI. Instead of paying separately for imaging software, hardware, and a diagnostic AI tool, a practice can now replace what it already has with one system.
IRIS now flags eight image quality issues, including cone cuts, overlapping contacts, and missed coverage, right after the X-ray is taken, so staff catch problems before the patient leaves the chair instead of finding out later. It installs in about ten to fifteen minutes per operatory, and doesn’t add a new app or workflow step. Built alongside Overjet’s diagnostic AI, IRIS is the front door to the system where you can capture the image, get the AI read, and show the patient what it found, all in the same visit.
This is IRIS’s second FDA clearance in just over a year. The first covered an AI-powered upscaling feature that sharpens image quality on the X-ray itself, regardless of sensor brand. Paired with this new quality check and Overjet Vision AI’s diagnostic overlay, IRIS now covers the entire visit in one system.
- AI upscaling improves image quality across more than 40 sensor models, so practices don't need new hardware to get a sharper X-ray.
- The new clearance catches quality issues, like cone cuts, while the patient is still in the chair.
- Overjet Vision AI overlays detected conditions, including caries, periodontal bone level, periapical radiolucency, and calculus.
- Dentists can pull up the recommended treatment on screen, in the same visit, based on those findings.
The clearance is backed by a 1,888-image study, reviewed against a three-dentist consensus and tested across 10 sensor manufacturers, in which IRIS identified quality issues with 98.6% specificity and 92.6% sensitivity.
Practices already using IRIS say it’s not just improving how often patients say yes to treatment but also how confident they feel about the care they’re getting:
“Most patients look at an X-ray and just see black, white, and gray. IRIS makes it clear enough that they can see exactly what I see, before they ever leave the chair. Once they can see the problem, they understand why treatment matters.” said Dr. Zerita C. Buchanan, DDS, MPH, Imagine Medical & Dental Group
“IRIS doesn’t just take the images. It makes sure the image is good enough to trust, before the patient’s even out of the chair. It works inside your current workflow while improving patient care,” said Wardah Inam, CEO and Co-Founder of Overjet.
IRIS is available now as part of Overjet's AI Solution for dental which spans imaging, ambient voice-captured clinical documentation, and revenue cycle management for dental practices nationwide. To see IRIS in action, visit overjet.com/iris.
