L. Brent Mitchell, MD, FRCPC, a noted cardiologist with a focus on heart rhythm science, serves on the panel of leading medical experts of MerckManuals.com.
Dr. Mitchell is emeritus professor in the Department of Cardiac Sciences, Libin Cardiovascular Institute, Alberta Health Services and University of Calgary, Canada. He is the author of three chapters of the Merck Manuals: Overview of Arrhythmias and Conduction Disorders, Specific Cardiac Arrhythmias, and Arrhythmogenic Cardiac Disorders, which are informed by his extensive clinical and research experience in cardiac electrophysiology.
Dr. Mitchell’s career as an academic interventional cardiac electrophysiologist spans over three decades, all of which were spent at the University of Calgary. In that time, Dr. Mitchell published over 100 authored, peer-reviewed, original research papers, over 300 multicenter trial, peer-reviewed, original research papers, over 100 book chapters/reviews/guidelines documents, and delivered over 500 lectures. Dr. Mitchell’s primary clinical practice and research interest is the clinical science of tachyarrhythmias. He has contributed to many of the pivotal randomized trials in heart rhythm science.
Dr. Mitchell served two terms as the founding head of the Department of Cardiac Sciences at the University of Calgary/Calgary Zone of Alberta Health Services and one as the founding medical director of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute. He also served as president of the Canadian Heart Rhythm Society. Additional honors include a Teacher of the Year Award from the International Heart Rhythm Society, an Annual Achievement Award from the Canadian Heart Rhythm Society, and election to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
Dr. Mitchell earned his MD from the University of Calgary in 1975. He then completed fellowships in general internal medicine and clinical cardiology at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, followed by a fellowship in academic clinical cardiac electrophysiology at Stanford University Medical Center in California.
Dr. Mitchell serves with more than 350 contributors to the Merck Manuals, an authoritative medical reference. He is retiring this year after 20 years of writing for the Merck Manuals.
