Merck Manuals, an authoritative medical reference, announced today that David Spiegel, MD, an internationally recognized psychiatrist and leading expert on the clinical and therapeutic use of hypnosis, serves on the panel of leading medical experts of MerckManuals.com. Dr. Spiegel holds several positions at the Stanford School of Medicine, including being Willson Professor and associate chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, director of the Center on Stress and Health, and medical director of the Center for Integrative Medicine. Dr. Spiegel is the author of the Dissociative Disorders chapter of the Merck Manuals, which is informed by his extensive clinical and research experience in psychiatry.
Over the course of a career spanning more than 40 years, Dr. Spiegel has received many prestigious awards for his work and has published 13 books, over 435 journal articles, and over 175 book chapters. In 2018, he was invited to speak on hypnosis at the World Economic Forum in Davos. His research, which focuses on stress, pain, anxiety, cancer progression, and response to trauma, has been funded by organizations including the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Cancer Institute, among others. He is Past President of the American College of Psychiatrists and is a member of the National Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Spiegel earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1971. He went on to complete his residency in psychiatry at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center and Cambridge Hospital, Harvard Medical School, followed by a fellowship in community psychiatry at Harvard’s Laboratory of Community Psychiatry.
