Matcheri S. Keshavan, MD, Stanley Cobb Professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Vice Chair in the psychiatry department at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and a leading researcher in the neurobiology of psychosis, serves on the panel of leading medical experts of MerckManuals.com. Dr. Keshavan is the author of the schizophrenia chapter of the Merck Manuals, which is informed by his extensive experience as a clinical psychiatrist, educator, and researcher.
In addition to his academic positions, Dr. Keshavan is the former editor-in-chief of the journal Schizophrenia Research and a senior psychiatrist at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center in Boston. Over the course of his career, Dr. Keshavan has written more than 1,000 publications and 4 books on psychiatry subjects including the neurodevelopmental basis of schizophrenia, neuroimaging, cognitive remediation, and early intervention. He has received several awards related to his teaching and research, including the 2019 National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Scientific Research Award and the 2019 Outstanding Research Award by the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry.
Dr. Keshavan earned his medical degree from Mysore Medical College in India, graduating in 1975. He went on to complete psychiatric training in Bangalore (India), Vienna, London, and Detroit.
