Renowned surgeon David A. Spain, MD, FACS, is serving on the editorial board for MerckManuals.com, an authoritative medical reference.
In his role for the Merck Manuals, Dr. Spain collaborates with the other board members to review the online content for accuracy and relevance.
Dr. Spain is a professor of acute care surgery and program director of the general
surgery residency at Stanford University. In addition to his academic work, he maintains an active surgical practice in elective and emergency general surgery, trauma, and surgical critical care. Dr. Spain’s research interests include trauma and surgical critical care, the introduction and assessment of new technology in patient care, and the assessment of trauma system performance. Over the course of his career, he has published over 350 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 35 book chapters.
Dr. Spain earned his medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1986. After completing a residency in general surgery at UMNDJ-Robert Wood Johnson, he pursued further training in trauma, burns and surgical critical care at the University of Louisville.
