Dr. Mandell is a professor and Chairman of Academic Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and the editor-in-chief of the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine. An expert on gout, Dr. Mandell co-authored the initial American College of Rheumatology gout guidelines and has served on the FDA’s Arthritis Advisory Panel, consulting on gout medications. Dr. Mandell is currently involved in clinical trials related to the development of new medications for the treatment of gout. He is on the Board of Directors of the Gout Education Society.
Over his career, Dr. Mandell has lectured frequently to physicians and patient groups on topics related to gout, vasculitis, systemic autoimmune diseases and has published over 300 articles, chapters, and editorials in peer-reviewed publications and textbooks related to clinical and basic aspects of medical science.
Dr. Mandell earned a PhD in physiology and biophysics from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 1977 and received his medical degree from New York University School in 1980. He then completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in rheumatology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
