Spinal Stabilization TechnologiesTM (SST) announced this week a landmark in its mission to improve spinal care: the approval of medical centers in Arizona that can begin offering the PerQdiscTM as part of an FDA Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) clinical trial for the new PerQdiscTM Nucleus Replacement Device.
After SST’s first successful U.S. PerQdisc surgery earlier this year in Louisiana, the trial will continue with Arizona spinal clinics and hospitals to evaluate the PerQdisc device for patients suffering from severe back pain caused by degenerative disc disease (DDD).
The Potential Value of the PerQdisc
The IDE trial will assess the PerQdisc’s ability to replace the nucleus pulposus of a single lumbar disc (L1-L5) with the intent to preserve motion and alleviate pain. Currently, patients with painful lumbar DDD face limited surgical options to augment the damaged nucleus pulposus – soft inner portion of a spinal disc – and deter further degeneration. What’s more, SST’s less-invasive procedure can reduce a patients’ need for prescription pain medication almost immediately, an important factor in reducing the overuse of opioids and other pain medications.
The PerQdisc offers a potentially restorative and preventative method to that of more invasive surgeries such as Spinal Fusion or Total Disc Replacement for treating DDD, which restricts motion and places increased stress on adjacent spinal levels. SST’s PerQdisc is an FDA-designated breakthrough technology that steers treatment away from fusion and leaves the surrounding anatomy of the disc and spine intact.
Recruiting Patients for Arizona Trial
SST is inviting patients with lower back pain who suffer from lumbar DDD to consider participating in this DISCPAIN1 Clinical Trial. The Arizona trial will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the PerQdisc as the new technology aims to maintain range of motion at the treated level and alleviate pain, potentially preventing progression of DDD at adjacent levels and reducing the need for pain medication.
