"Would be innovators preach the gospel of constant progress. However, in reality, we need to act now. Bad tech might lock us into procedures that are cumbersome, vendors who exploit and balloon overall costs, or worse further obfuscate computer systems which provide cybersecurity vulnerabilities that not only endanger privacy but threaten to destroy confidence in healthcare provision and the authority of healthcare providers.", says futurist Trond Arne Undheim, author of the new book Health Tech: Rebooting Society's Software, Hardware and Mindset published by Routledge today.
On the other hand, the possibility to conduct a reasonable amount of healthcare implementation “magic” is very real, but hinges on the technology-enabled business models and incentives that can be put into place by creative solutions with short time horizons for visible return of investment—yet with safeguards. Done right, the payback could be measured in millions of lives, billions of health span years, and increased lifespan for the world’s population.
"Health Tech captures the pivotal moment where health tech innovation can transform the world if we can competently align incentives with value creation.” —Jeff Karp, Distinguished Chair in Clinical Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine. Professor of Anesthesiology, Brigham, and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, principal faculty at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, affiliate faculty at the Broad Institute and at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology.
“Health Tech: Rebooting Society’s Software, Hardware and Mindset provides a historical context around the evolution of digital health technologies to better understand where we are heading next [...and...] helps us peek into the near future of medicine and healthcare.” —Dr. Bertalan Meskó, Director of The Medical Futurist Institute
