A woman’s intimate parts weren’t always so talked about as now. We are living in an era of information, breaking taboos and speaking aloud. Thanks to the trend of women’s empowerment that have certainly come to stay, now we can break all the myths about women’s bodies, genitals, and reproductive health.
This topic wasn’t as transparent as it is now. Women’s genitals were associated with dirt, sin, and stigma. The lack of information and ignorance caused multiple myths about what is normal and what is not regarding them. The result of spreading these myths was the appearance of standards and prejudices that made women suffer from low self-esteem and even harm their own health.
It’s the Norm!
Below are some facts about the labia that are true and proven. Every woman should know what is normal, how everything works in her body and that there can’t be a “wrong” labia. All our bodies are precious gifts; all sizes and shapes deserve love and respect and no one has the right to assume any part of your body to judge you in any way.
Labia exist in different shapes and sizes
There can’t be no “beautiful” or “ugly” shape or size of the labia. They are different like the shades of our eyes and hair, shapes of our noses, etc. There can’t be any abnormal look of the labia; they’re just diverse. Very rare cases of some inborn pathologies may not let the vagina function properly. If nothing brings you any physical discomfort in your daily and intimate life - there’s nothing wrong with your labia.
The size and shape of labia has no connection to your intimate life
Labia don’t change because of sex. No matter how many partners you had - they will stay the same. This is why no one can do any conclusions about your intimate life based on the look of your genitals - it’s emotional abuse, not an “expert thought”.
A darker shade of labia is normal
Some women may notice that the color of their genital skin and labia is slightly darker than the skin all over her body. It’s completely normal and doesn’t require any actions to change it. Many women try to whiten their genital skin at home and end up with burns. The only color you should worry about is bright-red if combined with pain or any other discomfort. Schedule an obgyn exam if you notice these symptoms.
It’s normal to have hair on your labia majora
All people have pubic hair, and it also grows on the labia majora. The fact that many women remove it, doesn’t mean it isn't supposed to be there. You may remove it or not, your body - your rules, but there’s nothing abnormal in its presence there.
You may possibly wash your labia wrong
You have labia majora and labia minora. Labia minora are much more sensitive than labia majora. Also, they’re smaller and have a more mucous structure. When you wash your labia try to avoid getting the hygienic product on the surface of your labia minora - it can cause irritation. Even if the product you choose is hypoallergenic, has friendly pH and all that stuff - leave it for labia majora; with labia minora, water is enough.
Now you are informed about your labia and you can spread this information to other women to help them understand their bodies and care about them better.
