Dive Brief:
- A New York judge has ruled that a group of Catholic organizations in the region do not have to give their employees with contraception coverage under PPACA.
- Under the PPACA, all group health plans and health insurance issuers must provide, with no cost-sharing, reproductive preventive care including all FDA-approved contraceptive methods and services.
- However, the judge found that the Catholic institutions had shown that the requirements compels them to perform acts that go against their religion.
Dive Insight:
The PPACA mandate requiring various forms of contraceptive coverage has been challenge several times already, and will probably be challenged further by Catholic institutions. It remains to be seen whether these challenges will stand, or whether the Obama administration will fight back, potentially all the way to the Supreme Court. This should be a hot issue over the next year or two.
