Nonprofit health systems MultiCare and Samaritan Health Services will merge on Nov. 1 after gaining approval from state regulators, the companies announced Monday.
As part of the deal, MultiCare – which operates 13 hospitals – will begin an affiliation with Samaritan and its network of five hospitals. MultiCare, which is based in Tacoma, Washington, will also invest $700 million over 10 years into Oregon-based Samaritan. Samaritan will continue to use its name, alongside MultiCare’s branding, the health system said.
“This milestone brings us closer to putting the investment and resources of our partnership to work for the people we serve.” said Marty Cahill, Samaritan president and CEO, in a statement.
The systems announced their intent to combine in late 2025, saying the deal would help Samaritan get access to tools and technology in order to meet “the growing health care needs of our communities.” The partnership would also help Samaritan weather looming cuts to healthcare programs, according to an FAQ on the deal.
Along with giving Samaritan additional resources, the deal also expands MultiCare’s reach into Oregon.
In August, the systems said they had received approval to combine from the Oregon Health Authority, and were targeting an Oct. 1 closing date. Oregon regulators approved the last part of the acquisition on Friday, which involved Samaritan’s health plans, according to the Lincoln Chronicle. The health systems said on Monday that “all public agencies” had either approved the deal or announced plans to do so.
