Dive Brief:
- IBM is partnering with NVIDIA on the “world’s fastest deep learning enterprise solution.”
- IBM PowerAI is a new deep learning software toolkit that speeds up machine learning and will increase IBM Watson’s AI capabilities by using several deep training methods to train the cognitive solutions platform.
- The new solution runs on an IBM server and uses NVIDIA’s NVLink interconnect technology.
Dive Insight:
The IBM PowerAI will “train computers to think and learn in a more human-like way at a faster pace,” according to IBM, which has been rapidly increasing its footprint in the world of healthcare. It is now available to some IBM customers and has artificial intelligence capabilities, which can help to improve diagnoses and care plans by sifting through patient data.
In recent years, AI has been more and more widely adopted in healthcare. "The need for data mining and decision-making has put artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled solutions at the forefront of the healthcare revolution, says market research company Frost & Sullivan, which estimates the market will reach $6 billion by 2021. "AI has the potential to improve outcomes by 30% to 40% while cutting treatment costs by as much as 50%."
Deep learning, which can rank aspects of data in order of importance, is currently being used by banks for fraud detection, in facial recognition, and in self-driving cars. It’s possible that IBM PowerAI will be applied to healthcare solutions as well, considering that IBM Watson is already being used to provide insights on cancer treatments and power smart hospital rooms, among other things.
