Dive Brief:
- Over the next seven years, healthcare employers will have to fill 6.5 million new openings, many of which will be for physicians.
- Research suggests that physician recruitment is proving particularly challenging. For example, a report from the Association of Staff Physician Recruiters found that 131 days was the typical length of time it took to fill a primary care position.
- Part of the reason that physician hiring is proving so difficult is turnover, which stood at 7.2% in 2012.
Dive Insight:
With turnover like that seen in 2012, it's little wonder that recruiters are scrambling to fill physician openings. And with the same forces that encourage turnover still in place, such as long hours, increased regulations and health IT concerns, it's not likely to slow down this or next year. Recruiters are going to be working against the grain; the institutions and practices they work for had best stop and think how they can stand out as a place not only to work, but to stay in place.
