Name: Virginia Tenpenny
Previous title: Chief social impact officer, NationSwell
New title: Vice president of community engagement, HCA Healthcare
Tenpenny will lead the hospital operator’s community engagement strategy, including its charitable and social investments, outreach and strategic partnerships. She’ll assume the role on Jan. 12, HCA said Tuesday.
Tenpenny replaces Joanne Pulles, who is retiring. Pulles, who spent 26 years with HCA, also served as president of the HCA Healthcare Foundation, the hospital operator’s philanthropy arm.
The new VP will join HCA from NationSwell, a membership community for corporate, philanthropic and nonprofit leaders, where she served as chief social impact officer. Prior to NationSwell, Tenpenny worked in executive roles at Goodera and Starbucks, according to her LinkedIn.
HCA operates about 190 hospitals and 2,500 ambulatory care sites across 20 states and the U.K. In 2024, HCA estimates it gave more than $48.5 million to community organizations through enterprise giving and over $18 million from employees through HCA matching funds.
“Virginia is a nationally recognized leader in community impact, corporate philanthropy and stakeholder engagement,” said Deb Reiner, senior vice president of marketing and corporate affairs at HCA, in a statement. “We are excited to welcome her to HCA Healthcare and are confident her leadership will help us continue to strengthen nonprofit partnerships and create meaningful impact in the communities we serve.”
