Barchi will lead CommonSpirit Health’s digital innovation and IT security starting Monday, and report to CEO Wright Lassiter III.
CommonSpirit was recently hit by a ransomware attack that has interrupted access to electronic health records and delayed patient care in multiple regions.
Among Barchi’s first tasks will be to assist in the ongoing response to the cyberattack, CommonSpirit said in a statement.
The CIO role is integral to the health system, Lassiter said in a statement. “I have no doubt that his expertise and leadership will help CommonSpirit deliver a more integrated digital experience for our patients, providers, and employees.”
Barchi most recently served as New York-Presbyterian’s CIO for seven years where he led the strategic vision and management of IT.
Prior to NewYork-Presbyterian, Barchi was the CIO at Yale New Haven Health System and Yale School of Medicine, where he was responsible for moving the system to a single electronic health record and developing a security operations center.
He was CIO at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia, between 2006 and 2010.
Early in his career, Barchi was an officer in the U.S. Navy, helping to drive cruisers.
Barchi graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and has a master’s in engineering management from Old Dominion University, according to his LinkedIn.
