Vizient Southern States Partners with IllumiCare to Offer Members Health IT Technology Proven to Lower Inpatient Costs

IllumiCare’s Smart Ribbon® technology gives physicians cost and risk data on medications, labs and imaging at the point-of-care

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. and ATLANTA, Ga., August 21, 2018 — Vizient Southern States, a membership alliance of not-for-profit health care providers, and IllumiCare,  a pioneer in point-of-care health IT, today announce a partnership benefiting member healthcare systems across Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee.

In a value-based care system, it is imperative hospitals contain costs, reduce variation and decrease overutilization. IllumiCare developed the Smart Ribbon® to assist providers in making better choices when presented with the financial cost and potential risks of medications, labs and radiology tests. The Smart Ribbon is a non-intrusive ribbon of information that appears within or momentarily hovers over a hospital’s EMR to display real-time cost, risk and other data. This empowers clinicians to practice more clinically efficient medicine, while also being better stewards of resources.

Vizient Southern States member hospitals now have easy access to deploy this technology and begin seeing savings. IllumiCare falls in line with Vizient Southern States solutions and collaboratives which help drive performance improvement and cost avoidance.  IllumiCare has been studied in both academic and community hospitals, comparing the behavior of providers with and without access to IllumiCare – of the same sub-specialties, in the same hospital and DRG-adjusted. Providers with IllumiCare, immediately after go-live, reduced their spend per admission by $170.

“IllumiCare’s solution aligns with our mission to ensure our members deliver high-quality, cost-effective care by connecting them with the knowledge, solutions, and expertise that accelerate performance,” said Michael S. White, FACHE, CHFP, Vice President of Business Development & Operations at Vizient Southern States. “Our members are transforming the way healthcare is provided by combining smart financial strategies with high-impact, clinical programs. We are excited to offer the Smart Ribbon to help our hospitals further drive high-quality, cost-effective healthcare.”

The Smart Ribbon is customizable to every hospital’s need, displaying different apps based on context and user. IllumiCare recently launched a controlled substance app for providers to access both inpatient and outpatient data on opioid exposure, alleviating a major blindspot in opioid prescribing.

“Vizient Southern States has built a strong membership of health systems looking to embrace the latest solutions available for providing better care,” said G.T. LaBorde, CEO of IllumiCare. “We look forward to working with its hospital and health system members to customize a Ribbon experience for them that empowers their providers to be clinical stewards of hospital and patient resources.”
