Dive Brief:
- According to a recent study by the Medical Group Management Association, 40 percent of doctors haven't yet decided whether they'll accept health insurance sold on the exchanges.
- A total of 64% of practices who don't want to accept network plans say administrative and regulatory burdens are an issue, and 62% worry about collecting from patients with high deductibles.
- Bear in mind that If your current insurance contracts have an "all products" clause in them, which is legal in most states, you'll have to accept whatever products created by the plans that insurer sells.
Dive Insight:
Accept exchange plans or reject them? Physicians have reasons to be concerned about the issue, which pits their natural desire to avoid collections costs against their desire to attract new patients. These plans aren't exactly a gold mine: reimbursement will be higher than Medicaid but lower than that paid by standard commercial plans. And the high deductibles that come with the lower-end plans are another worry. Clearly, physicians who have the option to avoid being involved have good reasons to opt out.
