Dive Brief:
- Salesforce has launched a new cloud-based platform for building secure apps.
- Called "Salesforce Shield," the tool targets companies with compliance, governance and regulatory requirements and includes Field Audit Trail, Platform Encryption, Data Archive and Event Monitoring.
- Capabilities can be purchased separately or together. The platform can assist customers to build apps that must meet internal and industry requirements, according to Larry Carvalho, IDC's platform-as-a-service research manager.
Dive Insight:
"Businesses struggle with balancing the speed of innovation that cloud platforms offer with compliance needs due to the lack of tools in existing platforms," said Carvalho in a statement. The company told Healthcare IT News that healthcare companies could use the Platform Encryption service to manage personal information and protect health information. Worth noting: It did not specifically state it could be used to build HIPPA-compliant apps. However, Paul Aldridge, Genomic Health CIO, said in a statement, it is anticipating Shield to "provide a significant contribution to our infrastructure," as the company transitions more business into the cloud.
