Dive Brief:
- In 2013, the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI) developed a framework that was designed to help healthcare organizations lower costs, improve healthcare delivery and achieve better outcomes.
- The 2013 WEDI framework included four key areas of focus: 1) patient engagement; 2) payment models; 3) data harmonization and exchange; and 4) innovation encounter models.
- The Louis W. Sullivan Institute has put together a report to update the industry on progress.
Dive Insight:
According to the Sullivan report, advancements have been made in both patient engagement and innovation encounter models. The report says that although health information technology literacy initiatives have lagged, the industry has continued momentum in patient information capture and identification. It also says that healthcare stakeholders are doing a good job of actively exploring and implementing innovative encounter models that leverage technology and provide patient-centered care.
Progress is not moving as quickly around payment models, as questions remain as to the success and sustainment of new payment models as they mature. The report also says that further efforts are required to standardize and harmonize data.
