Dive Brief:
- Though the switchover date for is a scant time months away, many healthcare groups are still lagging behind, according to new findings from KPMG.
- According to KPMG, 76% of respondents to a series of surveys said they completed in impact assessment, typically the first step in the ICD-10 cutover, but that less than half are actually conducting system testing, another important step.
- KPMG also found that providers are behind when it comes to testing their ICD-10 relationship with external entities such as clearinghouses, payers and providers. Twenty-six percent have begun in the external tests but 33% haven't started yet.
Dive Insight:
These results aren't just troubling, they're downright shocking, considering what's at stake here. With large numbers of providers largely unprepared for the change, what is left to wonder whether the entire payer financial infrastructure will grind to a halt with so many providers out of compliance. It seems that for many providers, ICD-10 will be more of a burn-the-midnight-oil, last-night-before-midterms transition. And that's certainly a shame.
