Dive Brief:
- Michigan has announced a first-ever program it says will improve healthcare delivery and reduce costs through Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS) technology.
- The state says its Department of Health and Human Services worked with the State of Illinois, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, and CNSI to create the country's only automated, real-time, cloud-enabled Medicaid system.
- The launch of the cloud-based Michigan MMIS realizes the goal of Michigan and Illinois' 2013 agreement to develop a new Medicaid-as-a-Service platform, not only to reduce costs and improve service, but to allow the states to split the cost of creating an advanced Medicaid system that could still be tailored to each state's regulations.
Dive Insight:
This is one example of healthcare providers looking to the cloud.
"Moving to the cloud allows us to better serve our residents and improve healthcare delivery, all while reducing costs," MDHHS Director Nick Lyon said in a prepared statement. "This unique initiative enhances our ability to maintain Medicaid systems, meet state and federal guidelines, and work with partners such as Illinois to create a multi-state platform that can meet the specific needs of our residents."
CNSI Midwest Region Senior Vice President Sharif Hussein suggests the "groundbreaking system" serves as a national best practice model for MMIS cloud implementation.
