Dive Brief:
- The Mayo Clinic is looking to develop a new campus in Onalaska, WI, a city located just north of La Crosse, where the health system spent $8.3 million for land in early 2014.
- The project still awaits local approval, but would likely be used for a specialty clinic that would employ 3,800.
- If approved, the Mayo Clinic aims to break ground in 2017 and to complete the project by 2019.
Dive Insight:
The city is set to vote next week on the Mayo Clinic Traffic Study, which looks at the project's traffic impacts. If it passes, the proposal then goes to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for approval.
Once fully developed, the potential new campus would become the largest employer in the area, local officials note. As the traffic report states, "The proposed clinic will be constructed in phases that could ultimately accommodate 3,800 employees at full development."
Mayo already has a clinic in Onalaska, but it would be dwarfed by the new development.
Officials from the health system told the media that the proposed site would be well-suited for a specialty clinic.
"We're very excited about the potential that the property brings and the potential to improve the services that we can provide for our patients and make it more convenient," said Joe Kruse, chief administrative officer at Mayo Clinic Health.
