Dive Brief:
- MercyRockford Health System in Illinois is building a new 'destination' medical campus on 263 acres in Rockford.
- At the center of the campus will be a 188-bed hospital.
- The hospital system is planning to spend $400 million on the new campus.
Dive Insight:
The medical center will include a women's and children's hospital with neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, a pediatric emergency department, a high-risk maternity unit, an adult hospital with a Level 1 trauma center, ten operating suites, a comprehensive diagnostic center and other medical services.
According to rrstar.com, the health system plans to repurpose about 200,000 square feet of its Rockford Clinic building for community organizations and other businesses. "This is another way we will transform the campus while strengthening partnership and creating jobs opportunities in the neighborhood," said Javon Bea, president/CEO of MercyRockford.
Around 20 of the 263 acres will be used for hotel, retail and restaurant development, which should help with branding.
