Dive Brief:
- A new survey from CareerBuilder and MiracleWorkers.com has concluded that 69% of healthcare workers feel stressed on their job, and 17% percent are "highly stressed."
- These stats put healthcare workers at the top of the pile as most stressed among the seven industries surveyed.
- The healthcare worker stress could possibly be attributed to growing workload, as 55% of healthcare workers say their workload has increased over the past year.
Dive Insight:
Healthcare worker stress is a critical problem which gets too little attention in the industry. It's inevitable that overstressed workers will make mistakes or at minimum, relate to patients in a less sympathetic manner. Workers who are being asked to juggle increasingly large workloads need extra support, which may mean adjusting schedules, adjusting paid time off policies or adding to headcount. One way or another, though, healthcare organizations need to do something to diffuse the stress their workers are feeling.
