Dive Brief:
- Cigna has released its eighth annual study comparing its consumer-driven health plan (CDHP) members with others enrolled in traditional PPOs and HMOs, using data from more than 3.6 million members.
- As it turned out, the insurer's CDHP members were 50% more likely to complete a health risk assessment. Also, 41% of those with chronic conditions were 41% more likely to join a disease management program if enrolled in a CDHP, the study found.
- CDHP members were also less expensive, accounting for 12% lower cost averages than traditional plans during the first year of operation.
Dive Insight:
This data suggests that CDHP enrollees are a different population than those in traditional PPOs and HMOs. It doesn't necessarily suggest, however, that CDHPs changed the behavior of consumers. Instead, it could be that a certain type of beneficiary—largely, one with the money to pay the high deductibles—is correlated with those who are more health conscious.
