Dive Brief:
- Cleveland Clinic released its list of the top 10 medical innovations that will transform healthcare in 2017.
- Topping the list is harnessing the microbiome for preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases.
- The Clinic announced the winners Wednesday during the 2015 Medical Innovation Summit in Cleveland.
Dive Insight:
More than 100 doctors and researchers selected the 10 innovations from nearly 200 nominations.
Among the innovations, which are ranked in order of anticipated importance, are: diabetes drugs that reduce cardiovascular disease and death; cellular immunotherapy to treat leukemia and lymphomas; fast healthcare interoperability resources; and bioabsorbable stents.
The FDA approved the first vanishing stent, Abbott’s Absorb GT1 Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold System, earlier this year. The device disappears after two years, allowing the artery to return to healthy, natural state. Cleveland Clinic cites estimates of the absorbable stent market reaching $2 billion in six years.
Also on the list is liquid biopsies, tests that can detect DNA shed from cancerous tumor into the bloodstream. The technology is being advanced through Vice President Biden’s Cancer Moonshot initiative
